PRE-ORDER: Almost There [LP]

Chicago rap pioneer LUCKI's Almost There plays like a midnight drive through the inner workings of an artist caught between the highs of underground superstardom and the quiet weight of his own vices. Released in May 2020 as a surprise 12-track mixtape, the project stands as a pivotal checkpoint in LUCKI's discography, serving as the bridge connecting his classic SoundCloud era to the blown-out, ambient pluggnb soundscapes that would come to define his commercial explosion.Throughout the mixtape, LUCKI captures a distinct sense of bone-deep exhaustion and detached romance, wrapping raw lifestyle admissions in his signature hypnotic, half-slurred flow. Float-along production from trusted collaborators like Brent Rambo, Callari & Plu2o Nash lays down a backdrop of lush, spacey synth loops and wall-shaking 808s. Track highlights like "Pure Love - Hate," "At Least I Think It's Real," "Pick A Flaw," and "Ouch Omen" showcase his unique ability to trade grand hip-hop boasts for weary introspection about rapid fame, troubled relationships, and self-medication, while fan favorites like "Prada Tune," "Nigo," and "Faith" deliver addictive, effortlessly melodic hooks.Tense yet calm, vulnerable yet unbothered, Almost There excels above all as a masterclass in mood-setting. Rather than just a standard collection of rap songs, it offers an intimate, highly atmospheric snapshot of a cult icon standing right on the precipice of mainstream stardom, fully aware of the personal cost it took to reach that threshold.
